Тема 17. Nowadays environmental problems are very important. What can people do in order to save our planet? And themselves?

From the very beginning people and Nature got on really well, like true friends. They respected each other and people were really grateful for having food and shelter. However, everything has changed. Now it is no relation of friends any longer. The man wants to be the master of nature and dictates his laws and rules. Nowadays people are becoming more and more destructive, rather than creative. They cut down trees in forests, they pollute air with harmful gases and water with industrial wastes. The paradise has been lost and we are on the verge of ecological catastrophe. But what is really awful is that people aren’t even aware of this danger. They keep on working for “scientific” and “technological” progress, consuming as much from Nature as they can and throwing away the wastes afterwards. They don’t care about the results for Nature and eventually for themselves too. But the boomerang is sure come back. I think it is time for us to stop and at last look back. Do we need this progress if we won’t survive because of it? What are we going to do on the barren planet if we cut down trees which bind the earth with their roots and protect it; which give us oxygen, which are major source of many medicines and home for flora and fauna.

Yes, I agree that we need wood for our needs, but why not to plant new trees instead? Why not to use purifying equipment to keep our rivers and seas clean? Why not to use unleaded petrol for cars to keep our air clean? We should do it not only for nature, but also for us, people. We are the only species that can change the world and we are the only one species that can choose either to look after our world or to destroy it.

I personally think this problem must me solved on two levels: on the global level, that is involving governments and environmental organizations such Green Peace. Because if the politicians don’t do anything, there will be no effective results. The second level is individual. I believe every man must stop littering in the streets, every man can plant flowers and trees making our planet green. We can sort out the wastes we produce. For example cans and bottles can go separately from wood wastes. And of course we must recycle our wastes.

All in all, If we unite on these two levels I’m sure we’ll our planet and what is important-ourselves.
